De Spell for Peggy

Time for a few more pieces of rare Barks artwork. This time a letter to Peggy Hardison written in 1963. She wrote the Disney company who in turn forwarded her letter to Carl Barks. As can be seen in the photos below she was a fan of Magica De Spell and Barks did a few drawings for her. Naturally, this was before he really got swamped with fan mail.

[The photos above was taken from an eBay auction many years ago. Don't know who got them or for how much.]

Very well-done for an unsolicited fan gift.

Wasn't there a point, as I remember we discussed when we first saw these images, that Barks' daughter Peggy (notice the name) died in 1963. Perhaps it's not so odd that Barks, when he received a fan letter from someone also named Peggy, spent some extra time making elaborate inked drawings.

Yes, Peggy died not long after Barks wrote this letter.

Damn.

Considering Magica is a witch, you could speculate that Carl already knew his daughter was sick(?), and it was an almost mystical attempt to remove her illness...

Wow thats pretty sad. He gets a fan letter from a girl with the same name as his deceased daughter and decides to send a nice response. Aside from that, these drawings of magica are awesome.
