Early Turner daily

Got a package from Ron Goulart yesterday and inside was this Wash Tubbs daily by Leslie Turner.

It's water damaged and the copyright sticker has fallen off. But it's still a strong example of Turner at his best. Just look at his use of craftint and pools of black.
It might even be the earliest surviving daily signed by Turner. His first strip was published less than a month before this. Anyone seen an earlier original Turner daily?

However, the main reason for showing this was not to brag about it (ok, ok a little...) but to see if anyone knows who Leslie Turner gave it to. "another Les" says the inscription. Les who?

Wanted: Jim Hardy

My friend Germund is looking for this Jim Hardy daily by Dick Moores.
It's dated 10/06/38 and was sold in September 2006 by Russ Cochran. If you have it and want to share a high resolution scan, Germund would be very happy. It will then be used as an illustration in an article about Dick Moores to be published this year.
Germund can be reached at

Opening bids are $1200- if you are interested make an offer –

Best George Hagenauer"

Myself I don't have the cash, but if you are interested drop George a line at

Disney montage

Yes, I know this montage is beeing posted on several other places on the net, but I just couldn't resist posting it here too. Lot's of recycled animation in this one...

The early works of Thorsjö

Browsing old issues of Kamratposten (9 and 12 from 1963) I found these:

Both are by Alf Thorsjö who in the 70's became the editor for Knasen, the Swedish Beetle Bailey comic book, for many, many years.
I thought it was fun to see these early cartoons by him. :)

It would be interesting to hear your thoughts.
Both are Swedish and released just three months apart, BTW.

Thoroughly Modern Minnie

Following the previous post here's more of Minnie. This time not so murderous...

Yesterday I was looking through a set of Disney stats. What I saw was probably clip-art sent to various publishers from the Disney studio in the 70's and 80's. I thought most of it was stiff and boring until I saw the following artwork in the bottom of the pile.

I guess these drawings are from the mid 80's, and that this was an attempt to make a more modern and up to date Minnie. There are some great, great poses to be found among these sheets! So I've scanned some of the best for you to enjoy. I sure got inspired when I saw them and if you are an artist I hope you will be too. :)

[Edit: These are all drawn by Daan Jippes. See the comments for further info.]

The Evaluator

Some excerpts from a comic I did for Joakim Tranquist at Malmö Högskola. Joakim also wrote the script.
A departure from the comics I usually do. It was really fun to do. :)

Birthday gift from Floyd

Yet another Gottfredson watercolor piece. What a birthday gift to get! This one is courtesy Heritage Auctions.

Jim Pabian

Some of you might remember Jim Pabian's work for the Disney comic books in the 50's. But have you seen his Hollywood Johnnie? Here are two samples from 1946. (Images grabbed from eBay a while ago.)

Tintin!

Hmm... I wonder if Herge ever saw these illustrations. They were made for a competition in Swedish kids magazine "Kamratposten", published in January 1963. The artist is not named on these pages, and I have no idea who it is.
I doubt that they would be able to print these today without beeing sued. :)

Bamse på skattjakt

Last month I finished the script for my second Bamse story book "Bamse på skattjakt". ("Bamse's treasure hunt") This one is based on a comic that I plotted and Mårten Melin scripted for Bamse in 2006.
The comic book version featured artwork by Lars Bällsten and the book will also be drawn by him. In fact that's what he's working with right now.

Here's a preview of the cover. (Rough sketch and inks by me, pencils by Lars.):

And a sneak peak at the interior (yet to be inked):

The book will be out in early August this year.

More Mel

A few more examples of the Mel Graff illustrations I got.
Ger Apeldoorn has posted some nice and rare Milt' Caniff illustrations over at his blog. Check them out if you havn't done that already.

Ger: Maybe you know when these Graff pieces were published?

Before I leave the studio for today I just have to share a panel from an upcoming Emma & Sara episode, drawn by Hedvig in what she calls a "fonky" style. :) I loved inking it and I hope the readers will enjoy it when it's published in Julia 8-9/09.
