I bet that Walt Kelly would have loved the current election in the US. So much to do political satire of.
Now, Walt is no longer with us, but his old strips are.
Here's a sample from my collection. Remember, the year was 1968 and
Richard Nixon, Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace were fighting for
power. Enjoy!

A new book on Walt Kelly
This book caught my eye on Amazon.com today:
Walt Kelly: The Life and Art of the Creator of Pogo
This should be interesting. "[...] essays by Walt Kelly scholars Tom Andrae, Carsten Laqua, and Mark Burstein together with an appreciation by Kelly's stepson, Scott Daley." 244 pages and July 27 as a release date. The only thing that makes me worried is the design. It screams "cheap fan publication" in capital letters. And if I may judge a book from it's cover, I'll stay away from it until I'm sure the repro quality on the inside is OK.
[Edit: This seems to be the final cover:
And it's a stunner! Beautiful! Thanks to Germund who alerted me.]
Until then: check out the wonderful Walt Kelly blog Whirled of Kelly!

Pogo and the Gleam
Now here's the answer to the question in the last post. What was shown was the back of a really nice piece of Floyd Gottfredson art from 1942.

Until very recently this belonged to my friend Germund, who had to sell it. It's Gottfredson at his very best with strong poses Mickey Mouse and the Gleam himself. Make sure you click on the image to see it in large format.
At the same time as I had the Gottfredson strip in my apartment, I also had several other pieces from Germunds collection "on loan". Including this Pogo daily from 1969. This shows that Walt Kelly was one of those artists that did maintain a very high standard through his whole career. Enjoy!

Dan Noonan's Egbert
One of the best artists working in the Walt Kelly style (and in the shadow of) was Dan Noonan. He was in fact so good at it that his stuff some times are mistaken for beeing Kellys. Check out for yourself in the sample "Egbert the Elephant" (ca late 40's) below.

More Mother Goose
Almost forgot about the Walt Kelly "Mother Goose" pages I made copies of a while ago. I think I promised to post a few more.

Beautiful, eh?
Now let us all bug Fantagraphics about a nice anthology of all Kelly's odd works when they have finished the Our Gang series.
Looking forward to the Pogo books but would like to see the Pogo Comic Books reprinted even more.
