Rip Kirby Part II

More stunning artwork by Alex Raymond from "Enter: The Mangler" 1946.

The artwork above were taken from shrunk, cut up versions that were re-mounted for publication in the 90's. But still...

Rip Kirby Part I

Alex Raymond 1946. Thought some of you might enjoy seeing a few panels from the stack of vintage Rip Kirby material, that I located earlier today.

Some more coming your way tomorrow.

Saturday, 15 September 2012

And the answer is...

... Alex Raymond!

He, without a doubt, pencilled them and signed them. Who inked them is another question wich remains open to debate. The panels below are taken from the final two weeks of "Bleak Prospects" (May 31 to June 12, 1948), IDW Rip Kirby vol 1, pages 256 to 259.

See how different the inking is compared to the style with heavy brushstrokes normaly used around this time. ( Even the lettering is different on these strips. ) The style reminds me of the work of Russell Patterson. Could it be him helping Raymond out? Or is it Raymond himself testing another style? Guess we'll never know.

Speaking of Alex Raymond and inkers. The weeks leading up to these final two weeks of the "Bleak Prospects"storyline are also inked by someone else than the regular inker. In that case I'm pretty sure who the ghost inker is.

Looks like Frank Godwin,  doesn't it. :)

Rare Savings Bonds ad

This rare page was sold on eBay yesterday for $355. (!!!)
Never seen any of these images before. Caniff, Schulz, King etc. I hope IDW can get hold of a good scan of Raymonds piece for their books.

Rip Kirby cover x2

Tried to find the early Rip Kirby stories by Alex Raymond in my bookshelf today when I stumbled upon this cover.

Digging further down the pile of old comic books this one turned up!

This is the cover of Agent X9 published more than 20 years after the above cover. The same illustration used again to a different story! Also, notice how different the colors reproduce on the two versions, even if they obviously are taken from the same painting.

I don't know who made the cover art but it was based on this panel, found in Toppserien.

And speaking of Raymond I wrote a short review of Tom Roberts book on Amazon a few days ago:
"Just a quick review for those of you still hesitating wether you should buy this book or not.
Buy it! I'd say.
It's loaded with rare artwork and photos of Raymond in action.
The selection of drawings are not the usual dailies or sunday pages (Even if there are a few of those too.) but it's mostly rare and/or previously unseen stuff. Several of these "unpublished" pieces has actually appeared in Russ Cochrans "Graphic Gallery", but that was a long time ago.

One thing that bothered me was that all of the black and white line art drawings had been reproduced in a way that they look like "grey" drawings instead. Raymonds sharp ink lines has been changed into grey lines where the pixels shows. (If you own the book: Take a close look again if you don't believe me.)
The black and white images could have been so much sharper reproduced.
Too bad on an otherwise excellent book."

Let's hope someone will do a complete reprint of Raymonds ten years on the strip.
But then... make sure the black and white line art is scanned properly and is sharp. OK? :)

Some Raymond stuff

Yikes!
Time to pay taxes again. It feels like I earn less and less money and get more and more expenses every year. And the tax papers confirms it. Maybe time to stop buying expensive original art...
Or at least until another nice Crane daily turns up. :)
So this snapshot of me (taken a few weeks ago) inking an Emma & Sara page with cash everywhere doesn't exactly tell the truth anymore. Wish I was rolling in dough everyday, not just on pay day...

BTW: I've just looked at the new Raymond book by Tom Roberts over at Germunds place, and I can tell you that it looks just gorgeous! Loaded with rare art and photos. It's really a "must have"!
Me want it now...

And speaking of Raymond, here are two pieces I've found on microfilm. (Dunno if they are in the book or not.)

First a short bio from "The Bradford Era" June 27, 1946.

Then a teaser from "Waterloo Sunday Courier" March 10, 1946.
(I know the image is often reprinted but I hadn't seen the ad itself before.)

Alex and Cutie

Just got the news that the book "Alex Raymond: His Life and Art" finally is out there. :)
Guess it's one of those "must have" books this year.

BTW: I just finished the new "topper" (wich actually is a bottom strip) to the Emma & Sara page: Sötis (Cutie).
It's not ment to anything more than... silly. And cute. Enjoy!

PS.
There was a Franklin Booth (!!!) sunday page posted on Strippers Guide yesterday! No joke!
Never knew he ever did comics.

Even more Raymond...

As promised here are some more Alex Raymond photos. There are more to be seen but I don't want to shove them all down your throats at once. Some of you probably prefer to see photos of babes dressed up in bunny suits instead of photos of a cartoonist that died more than 50 years ago. Right? But what do I care?
Here are Raymond in his prime. Enjoy!

First off is a photo of a younger Alex. This was shot in late 1940. (Date on back of photo is Dec. 24.)

Here he is in 1950 with Rube Goldberg and Milton Caniff! Anyone knows what happened with the artwork he was presented? Reproduced anywhere?

Here he is seen signing something in 1950. Anyone knows what and who the other people on the photo are?

OK! OK! Now I'm getting tired of Alex photos myself.
Let's see... What do I have here? A photo of a babe in a bunny suit!
You knew it, didn't ya?
Info for Bunny spotters: This is Lori Lancester picking cotton (For her tail?) in 1962.

The masters touch

While waiting for tomorrows Alex Raymond photos here's an obscurity. His handprint! Now you can study every line of his hand. Confess it. You know that you will click on the picture to enlarge it you, you hand fetishist you...

You can also print this out, bring it to your plastic surgery clinic and ask them to re-make your own hand to look like Alex'. With a hand like that you should be able to draw like the master himself!
Now, who will be the first idio... ahem blog reader to try it?

More Raymond photos

Before posting the rest of Leslie Turner's Easy sundays, here are some more Alex Raymond photos from ca. 1949-1950. All sent to me by Ulrich Merkl, author of the new Winsor McCay book "The complete DREAM OF THE RAREBIT FIEND (1904-1913)" (Follow the link to his website.)

The first photo has Raymond together with his assistant Ray Burns, but who are the persons in the last two photos? Anyone who knows?

Alex Raymond photos

I'm back blogging again!
It's been hot, hot, hot here in Sweden the past week but today the rain came and made it easier working and thinking again.

Anyhow, here are some rare photos of Alex Raymond that was sold on eBay a while ago. If you didn't catch them then, here they are now: (Please click on photos and descriptions for larger images.)

First we have Alex and his assistant Ray Burns. (Notice the poster by Raymond in the background. The pencils to it can be found in one of Russ Cochrans old Graphic Gallery catalogs.)
