The Housemaid's Knee

This piece was auctioned last sunday on Heritage.

The description reads: " Donald Duck Partially Inked Daily Comic Strip Original Art (King Features Syndicate, undated)"

Well...
It's quite obvious that this is a badly traced strip, partially inked by an amateur. Not an unfinished KFS strip. Still, someone paid ca $155 for it!
Not a forgery, but not the real deal and practiacally worthless.

The real February 4, 1955 daily can be seen here: http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=YD+55-02-04

Alameda Times-Star, Nov 10, 1937

Got this from Bill Blackbeard many years ago.
An Al Taliaferro drawing from Alameda Times-Star, Nov 10, 1937.
It was reprinted by Gladstone in the 80's and is often credited to Floyd Gottfredson.
Enjoy!

How to spot a Mickey drawn by Taliaferro? The easiest way is to check if Mickey is moving like Donald Duck. Then it's Taliaferro behind the pencil. Here are two samples of how he drew characters walking. (Notice the dust clouds.)

Duluth's Centennial Year - 1956

Just picked up this one.

The Cosmopolitan Magazine Section of the Duluth News-Tribune, July 29 1956.
Cover art by Al Taliaferro. The interior features special artwork by Walt Kelly, Chic Young, Al Capp and others. I wonder how many of these that have survived?

PS. The image above is pretty similar to this one from 1954.

(Image taken from Inducks.).

And it just re-appeared as a "new" cover in Holland. (Thanks, Gerben!)

Al Taliaferro pencil sketch

How often do you come across a pencil sketch of Donald and Daisy Duck by Al Taliaferro? Almost never, but a few days ago this piece turned up on eBay. (It sold for $232.50.)
Anyone who knows if this piece was inked and published?

Who are these people?

Update October 24 2014!
These photos most likely are the ones Don Ault is talking about during his interview with Paul Murry in the 70's. If so these slides comes from Bill Wright and were taken in 1941.
( Can't update any text below the Gottfredson photo on my ipad, but the shortest guy is Bill Wright. )

It's identification time!
These photos turned up in a flickr gallery a while ago and I guess they come from the collection of Don Ault. (?)
Now, it looks like they were all taken outside the Disney Studios Comic Strip Department. But who are these guys? Who took these photos? (My guess is that they took turns shooting and that they come from one of the artists.) And when? The mid 40's? (And of course, if anyone got these in better resolution that would be fantastic. Images like these can always be used in books and articles on Disney comics history. )

Well, the he first one is actually easy. It's Floyd Gottfredson.

Could this be Dick Moores?

This looks like Al Taliaferro.

Please use the coments field if you got any info on these.

The Disney Penthouse Club 1942

This membership card to the Disney Penthouse Club just sold on eBay.
For $238.49.
Not only are these membership cards seldom seen but this once belonged to Al Taliaferro!
And it's signed by Les Clark too!!! The other signature seems to be Walt Pfeiffer's.
A nice li'l gem. Congratulations to whoever bought it!

I don't think I've ever seen any photos from the Penthouse Club. Are there any out there?

Here's to Hank! Part I

A few weeks ago a bok filled with drawings by various Disney Studio artists was sold on eBay. The book was given to Hank Porter who was in hospital at the time.
Some pieces are really good and some are of lesser quality, but I decided to post all of the images I found on eBay here anyway. (Not all of the pages were shown in the auction.)
It's dated February 1949 and I hope yopu enjoy this unusual piece of Disney history. (I didn't win it but I hope the current owner don't mind me posting these images here.)

This looks like the handwriting of Floyd Gottfredson:

Al Taliaferro:

Frank Reilly:

Manuel "Gonzy" Gonzales:

Bill (?) Walsh:

This was only the first half of the book. Watch out for more in a day or two. :)

Check out the vintage storybooks blog for the first part of Al Taliaferros "Donald Duck and the Hidden Gold". A rare gem!

Taliaferro panel

This Mickey Mouse panel by Al Taliaferro was sold a few days ago. Anyone who knows which MM sunday this was cut from?
I'd guess it's from the late 30's.

And this beauty was also sold. A Mickey daily by Gottfredson inscribed to Don Ault. How I wish I could have afforded that one. Sigh...
